講演演題：Probiotics versus pathogens: why and how?

Probiotics are defined as which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health beneﬁt on the host by FAO/WHO. To date, many health beneficial facets of probiotics have been reported such as anti-diarrhea, controlling bowel diseases, immunomodulation, cholesterol lowering, lactose tolerance improvement, preventing cancers, alleviation of food allergy, and so on. Besides, probiotics is capable of preventing pathogenic infection to the hosts by the action of secondary metabolites, e.g. organic acids and antimicrobial peptides and proteins such as bacteriocin, that they produce during the proliferation in the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, probiotics exhibit antimicrobial activity via so-called “competitive exclusion” and modulation of hosts’ immune system such as enhancing their IgA production. Such a control of pathogenic infection by probiotics attracts attention in terms of reducing antibiotic usage, which has been highly concerned recently. In this lecture, general background in relation to the interaction among probiotics, pathogens, and hosts will be introduced, and furthermore potential of competitive exclusion by an emerging probiotic strain will be discussed on the basis of experimental results obtained in my laboratory.
